The Multi Purpose Capabilities Of A Panel Saw

I’ll bet you’re not using your panel saw for these other purposes.

Panel saws are mainly used for crosscutting and ripping sheet goods. But they can also be used for joinery.

Remove the saw from the machine and mount a router and then you have a machine for cutting dadoes – very handy when dealing with large panels.

Watch the video and see how it is done.

Mill Your Own Lumber Like A Pro

Here’s a more pro version of the chainsaw mill I wrote about a couple of days ago.

With the rigid metal guide rail you won’t get any flexing up and down so there is more control on your plank thickness.

And with a long chain bar you can get an attachment for a second guide rail on tho other side of the log – ideal for really big logs.

Every Shop Needs A Panel Saw

How Do You Cross Cut Sheets Of Plywood?

My shops have always been too small to do it on the table saw.

And I used to use the circular saw all the time.

These saws sure speed up the cutting process and make sheet goods handling in the shop a whole lot easier.

The Best New Invention In Bee Keeping Since The 1800"s

Honey Flowing Straight Out Of The Hive.

These inventors have invented a special frame for inside a bee hive which allows honey to be drained out of the hive through a plastic tube.

It’s like having honey on tap, just turn the special tool and watch the honey flow out of the hive.

This is quite a revolution. No more opening up the hive, you can look in a window to see when the honey is ready to harvest.

How To Make A Great Bulletin Board

Custom Made Bulletin Boards Are Easy Projects To Tackle

Often times you need a bulletin board to fit a very specific wall space. The boards you buy are either too small or too big, plus they don’t look that great.

The solution is to build your own. That way it can be any size you want and you can put any style of frame around it you want.

I use prime coat tentest for the board itself. You could buy a commercial bulletin board larger than the one you are building and cut it to size and put a nice frame around it as well.

This is my favorite saw horse design.

These horses were built over 30 years ago. Built out of birch they have mortise and tenon joints with some additional triangular braces for added strength.

There is a sacrificial 2×2 screwed on to the top And that is covered in carpet to protect any prefinished work pieces.

Height wise they were built to be a couple of inches lower than a table saw top so they can and very often are used to make an off feed table.

My Favorite Saw Horse Design

They will carry a lot of weight, probable more than 2000#.

And best of all they nest together well, taking up little storage space in the shop or the back of my truck.

Not the kind of horses to be left out in the rain and they need to be chained up when not in use on the job.

They with definitely out last me.

How to hang doors fast using metal clips

How To Frame A Door Opening So The Door Frame Fits

Fast Easy And Accurate Way To Set Door Frames

The guy who invented these clips was a genius.

I’ve been using these clips for a year now and I love them.

The clips cut the time it takes to hang the door and frame in the opening by over half.

And lets face it when you nail the casings on the frame the frame gets locked in place sideways. That’s the genius of this system, – position the frame quickly with the clips and lock it in place with the casings. For hollow core doors this works just fine.

The second set of clips on the back side aren’t really necessary. I use a spreader board that I set on the floor so I can align the bottoms of the frame square as i nail the casing on the back side.

Shop Tip Of The Day

This tip is about buffing out a wax finish on small parts.

You’ll find that a paint roller sleeve makes a great buffer. You just need a way to mount it.

The drill press is the obvious choice.  Get a block of wood of suitable length and start planning the corners off until you get a snug fit of the paint sleeve.

Drill a hole down the center of the block for a bolt or a threaded rod and chuck the rod in the drill press.

A dab of hot melt glue could be used to hold the sleeve in place if the fit is a bit loose.

At Wood Magazine —Sam Johnson, Covington, Ga.– suggests using a spindle sander instead of the drill press.

“To quickly buff out a wax finish on small projects, turn to your oscillating spindle sander. Just cut a thick-nap paint roller in half and slide it over a spindle drum. It fits perfectly and works quickly to bring out a wax luster.”

Round Over Edges With A Block Plane

This is a technique all craftsmen use from time to time.

I’ve spent countless hours rounding over edges with my block plane.

For a small round over this can save time compared to just using sand paper, such as on the edges of doors.

For round overs in the 1/8″ to 3/8″ range a block plane can be used, but I soon discovered that a round over bit in my laminate trimmer router saves a lot of time.

That aside this is an good skill to learn for doing those rounded edges where the radius isn’t constant or for bull-nose edges where you don’t have a router bit for the task.

The 3 4 5 Triangle Method For Getting Square Layout Lines

This is a bread and butter method for any layout man or woman.

I’m not sure the gal in the video did all that much site layout. Her theory of the 3 4 5 triangle method  is correct though.

Here is what I would suggest. After establishing your 3′ (or 4′)  base line along the known layout line, Hold the 4′ of your tape on one end of the base line and draw an arc 4 ‘ radius. Then hold the 5′ of your tape on the other end of the base line and draw the 5′ radius arc.

The intersecting arc point is the layout point you are looking for.  Now connect the first end of your base line to the intersection of the arcs and you have your square angle.

Extension Cord and Air Hose Management

Here’s another way to roll up your air hoses and extension cords ready for storage.

We all have our favorite way to roll up cords. I like this method for heavier and stiffer cords.

The one thing I do different is at the start I leave the loose end longer than the loop – that way it is far less likely to get crossed in the loop causing a knot. This saves a lot of time when you unroll the cords.

This is a great way to roll up air hoses.

Here"s A Few More Finish Carpentry Tips

Finish Carpentry Gets A Whole Lot Tougher When The Site Conditions Are Note Perfect

But let’s face in, no site is perfect. It’s these tricks and tips your about to see that separate the wanna be finish carpenters from the pros.

An Oscillating Multi Tool Can Come In Handy

The problem is the transition strips between different types of flooring get installed before the baseboards. Now you could notch the bottom of the baseboard or you could cut the transition strip shorter.

Transition strip interfering with the baseboard installation

On every trim job, there’s at least one situation where an oscillating multi-tool can save the day. Whether it’s trimming the bottom of an installed casing or notching a transition piece, an oscillating tool with a woodcutting blade is the perfect choice. Prices have come way down, so it’s a tool every finish carpenter can afford. For more information, see “Oscillating Tool Uses.”

Using an oscillating multi tool to cut wood trim

Keep the Baseboard From Tiping

Sometimes the drywall mud buildup stops short of the floor and this missing mud causes the baseboards to tip at the corners making it hard to get a good fitting joint.

Tipped baseboard leads to an open joint

Most drywall is installed with the tapered edge parallel to the floor and with at least 1/2 in. between the drywall and the floor. The combination of the space along the floor and the drywall taper can allow the baseboard to tip in at the bottom. This isn’t a big problem along the length of walls, but at inside corners, the tilt can make fitting coped corners difficult. The second photo shows a simple fix.

How To Keep Molding Joints Tight

Have you ever started nailing a casing only to discover the frame was out past the drywall surface and as the casing tipped back the miter joint opened up?

You could shim the back side of the casing or fasten the joint together.

11 finish carpentry tips

Strengthening trim joints with biscuits may seem like overkill, but it’s a great way to keep miters tight and prevent misalignment when you nail moldings to the wall. This tip is especially useful for larger casings, which are harder to hold in alignment. But you can add biscuits to just about any joint that’s wide enough to accommodate them. The photos show how.

On new doors and windows that are perfectly square, some carpenters cut and assemble the casings with biscuits and nail the assembly to the wall after the glue dries. Or you can use the technique we show here and add the biscuits as you go.

Finish Carpentry Tips 2 - Dealing With Site Conditions

Things are never perfect on site – you have to deal with it and end up with a great result.

On this page you’re going to discover three more tips the great finish carpenters use daily.

First let’s take a look at what to do when you come across a difference in floor height.

Make Blocks For Transition Points

How do you handle baseboard height transitions

The problem is that different floor height can cause an ugly baseboard joint. One solution is to use transition blocks.

Used tastefully, transition blocks can be a real problem solver for finish carpenters. Rather than struggling to align moldings or fudging to match profiles, you can make a nice transition with a decorative block. You can buy ready-made blocks, but it’s easy to make your own. Cut the block to the height and width you think look good. Then cut or rout the top or add a small molding to complement your trim style. Use transition blocks where stair skirts intersect baseboards, where floor levels change, or at the bottom of door casings where the baseboard is thicker than the casing.

How To Handle Large Bumps In A Wall

There can be a few reasons for these large bumps in walls. It might be some garbage behind the drywall. It could also be a wall stud that isn’t nailed in the right place.

how to handle a bump in a wall

Careful framing is the key to easy trim installation. But in the rush to get the walls put up, framing carpenters sometimes get a little sloppy. A stud that’s not lined up with the plate causes a big hump in the wall, making it difficult to get the baseboard tight. But if you’re courageous enough to cut into your wall, the fix is simple. Start by cutting out a little chunk of drywall right at the hump to see what the problem is. There could just be a chunk of drywall or other debris trapped between the drywall and the bottom plate. Or the stud could be misaligned. If this is the case, see the second photo for the solution.

How to fix a wall stud nailed in the wrong place

Clean The Excess Drywall Mud From The Corners

This is a job that just has to be done. The ideal time to do it is when the mud is being scraped off the floor. If you don’t do it the baseboard joints will be hard to make perfect due to the tilting and rocking of the baseboards.

Get rid of the lumps and bumps

Even careful drywall tapers can end up with an accumulation of joint compound near the bottom of inside corners. The problem is that all that extra mud prevents the baseboard from fitting well. The trick is to scrape off the buildup before you start installing the base. You can use a small pry bar with a sharp edge, a dull chisel or a stiff putty knife scraper. Before you start scraping, mark the top of the baseboard on the wall. Then scrape below the line where it won’t show.
