You Can Replace Vinyl Siding With Brick

These New Thin 1″ Real Brick Veneer Systems Make It Possible

I just came across this product which I hadn’t seen before and it looks really good.

Standard brick veneer needs a structural support to sit on – usually the concrete foundation wall or a 4″ angle fastened to a concrete wall.

But with these 1″ thick bricks the wood walls can supply all the support.

The good thing here is that you end up with a quality brick cladding on a building that was not designed for traditional brick.

Let’s face it vinyl siding looks cheap — because it is.

How To Install An Exterior Door

The Exterior Doors On A House Are Probably The Most Used Doors You Have.

This door has to shut and fit the frame perfectly in order to be of any use.

The fit will ensure the weather strip does it’s job correctly.

Making sure the frame is plumb and level also means the door hardware will fit and operate properly.

If the two opening sides are not parallel in and out wise you might have to tweak one or both corners of the frame in or out to get a proper fit of the door.

The video shows peal and stick membrane being used at the door sill. We would also run it up the sides and across the top too. Once the door has the brick mold on we’d put the drip flashing on top and another strip of peel and stick on that flashing and up the wall. We’d also caulk between the brick mold and peel and stick to ensure no water gets in.

Spray Foam In A Can - Which One To Use

There are several different spray foams on the market, you have to use the right one in the right place.

There are several different types of spray foams out there in the market place.

Each one has certain qualities which make it a good choice for a specific application.

Probably the main difference between foams is the amount they expand and the pressure that expansion exerts.

If you are foaming the gaps around a window or door you want very little expansion so that the preasure does not push the frame out of alignment and cause problems with windows and doors closing.

If you are foaming gaps in a structure to stop air infiltration, you want the foam to expand to reach all the nooks and crannies. So long as the pressure from the foam can’t move anything your OK.

The video below goes into more detail on the use of foams.

Wooden Car Craftsmanship

Wooden cars of days gone by

Before fiberglass and carbon fiber the fiber of choice was wood.

Wood was sometimes used in cars for a number of reasons.

Wood is attractive. Wood was lighter than steel so you needed a smaller engine to power the car.

Here are 4 of the coolest wooden cars.

The Chrysler Town and Country

The Crysler Woodies

It’s the classic woodie. These station wagons were build of wood because it was a simpler cheaper way to build a full wagon body than working with steel at that time.

Those woodie wagons ended up getting famous for serving as the stereotypical surfer transportation of choice before the days of VW Buses, Dodge vans, and whatever else. Cool as it was to hang out with Jan and Dean, if we had to pick just one woodie to represent them all, we’d go for a stunning old Chrysler Town & Country, from the days when Chrysler was a top luxury brand. We are particularly drawn to the prewar fastback sedans, which themselves played a part in replacing wood with metal. They were the first woodie longroofs to have an all-steel roof.

1939 Lagonda Rapide Tulipwood Tourer

This big British cruiser came powered with a 4.5 liter V12 churning out 225 horsepower. We imagine that’s enough to get the brass-riveted tulipwood body up to speed with frightening alacrity for such a sizeable automobile.

The wood made for a good building material as it was light, could be made into aerodynamic shapes like this torpedo body, and was much stronger than the other lightweight car body material of the cay, canvas. If you’re wondering how much it costs to get something as stunning as this in your massive garage, you’ll have to have something around $450,000. That’s how much this Lagonda went for when it was put up for auction back in 2007.

 Morgans

Morgans had little engines, but didn’t weight much on account of their wood frame. Low costs and an endless supply of eccentric British customers meant that Morgan could keep on building its elemental four-wheeled cars and never have to stop. You can still buy one of these things new today, and they are regular front runners in vintage races all over the world.

Morgan even keeps its wood thing going with their new heavily aluminum Aero 8, with its Ash frame getting plenty of punishment form a nice, big BMW V8.

This 1924 H6C, with a 200 horsepower, eight-liter straight-six wrapped up in a tulipwood body was built to take on southern Italy’s great road race, the Sicilian Targa Florio.

The coachwork of ¾ inch strips of wood was built by a French aviation company, Nieuport and it weighed a mere 160 pounds. Like the Lagonda, the wood was riveted together with brass, and it looks absolutely amazing.

9 Reasons For Living Off Grid

There Are Many Reasons For Living Off The Grid

Usually it centers around people thinking life will be easier, less stressful and that may make them happier.

The truth is probably a little bit different. For all the conveniences you have on the grid it usually takes some work when you are off the grid. If you are not willing to work, it’s not the place to be.

For those willing to put in the extra effort there can also be a lot of positive things about living off the grid and here are my top nine reasons.

off grid 2

1. Self sufficiency

Living off grid is all about living a self sufficient lifestyle, one not dependent on outside resources because you create your own resources thereby reducing or totally eliminating your dependence on a system that could collapse at any moment.

2. Sustainable living

It’s about living more sustainably. Without constantly consuming resources, you will actually be producing more than you consume. This has the added benefit of not only providing for your family, but contributing to your local community.

3. Renewable energy

The use of renewable energy only makes sense. Using an energy source that is not renewable is absurd. Fossil fuels are not renewable, at least at the rate we are consuming them. So it makes sense to use sources of energy that are completely renewable, and that can be shared. Renewable energy is also more sustainable long term, and that’s just smart living.

 4. Environmentally responsible

When one realizes their own responsibility is just as valuable as the next person’s and that no one person’s responsibility is less than another’s to make this world a better place, then we come to a crossroads where we must, as responsible human beings, and for the future of our children and their children, be more environmentally responsible, or there may not be an environment left for them.

5. Preserves knowledge

When we live sustainably it preserves the knowledge through the ages for generations to come. If we all lived in a consumer world we’d lose this precious knowledge and it would be lost forever. What would we do if we didn’t preserve that knowledge by sharing it with our kids, and the world? The advent of the internet and high technology allows us to share with the entire world, with the click of a mouse, the knowledge of our ancestors, forever preserving the knowledge for humanity.

6. Teaches future generations

Teaching others brings its own rewards, both for the student and the teacher. The beauty of it is that being off grid allows us to teach a new (old) way of living that everyone should know. The reward of the good feeling of teaching is just a bonus.

7. Avoids consumerism & waste

Consumption of resources is running rampant, and needless waste is at an all time high. To reduce waste and consumerism it’s much better to create and produce resources. When you live a sustainable and renewable lifestyle you become a boon to society and create more than you use. This helps keep consumption to a minimum and sets a great example for others.

8. Leads by example

Because you’re doing it, you’re living the lifestyle, you’re leading by example. When you walk the talk, and live this lifestyle, it shows others there is another way to do things. That it doesn’t have to be all about consuming, that you can give back, and still live a fulfilling and rich life.

9. Healthier lifestyle

It’s just plain healthier because you’re more active. The benefits of physical activity and exercise on your life, overall, are innumerable.

Garden Mood Lighting

There Are Two Types Of Lighting You Can Put In Your Garden.

Lighting to see by and lighting that invokes a mood or special atmosphere.

There are many ways to achieve mood lighting with store bought lighting as lou’ll see is the video below.

There are also a lot of DIY solutions light this article talks about.

Sometimes it’s purpose is to create a mood, or ambiance to your setting. So this is what we are going to focus on and have some fun with it. We’re going to take a look at a few different project and ideas. Then you can take these and expand upon them with your own do it yourself touch.

Recycling and saving money  Really is the Name of the Craft so lets look at a whole selection of lighting that can be made either with recycled materials or dollar store buys:

Beautiful isn’t it? You can do this with almost any type of container because it’s actually done with glow in the dark paint. You can pick up used terra cotta pots or light globes from yard sales. You may even have a few around your home that you have long since replaced with more modern day lighting. In any event all you are going to do is paint the pots with a good glow in the dark paint. Then you just set your little larger than the opening flower pots into the openings.

For good quality glow in the dark paint you can check out the Rust Oleum Glow in the Dark paint found at Home Depot, or at your local craft shop.

OH The Things People Will Make

It’s An Attention Grabber For Sure.

It’s a wooden bicycle but it has no wheel on the back. It’s got little legs that it walks with.

And that boneshaker big front wheel – I love those spiral spokes.

There are a couple of videos below which show this amazing bike in atcion

https://vimeo.com/123066397

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C3_7cd-jhg

Ron Schroer’s Boneshaker Bigwheel superficially resembles the kind of old-timey bicycle called penny-farthing, but don’t be fooled: the all-wood machine actually crawls on a set of legs on the back.

Schroer says the project was inspired by Theo Jansen, the Dutch designer who makes wild and wooly wooden creations. Besides making the vehicle weirder and more fun, the legs allow it to traverse more rugged terrain.

This Plywood Hammock Has Perfect Contours For Comfort

It’s a new take on the classic hammock design.

Adam Cornish who got his degree in furniture design from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Has come up with an absolutely stunning design here.

The wooden pieces in his design can move and adapt to the shape of your body making this hammock quite comfortable.

Here is what Adam had to say about this hammock.

“My work is inspired by the forces which interact with our world,” he said in a profile for a 2010 exhibition. “When forces meet materials they cause patterns, shapes and structures which are evident in our everyday life. A force that would completely splinter and destroy a piece of wood will gently ripple and bend a piece of stainless steel in the most beautiful manner. I try to create objects using this simple observation.” – See more at: the original article

Silicon Tubes Have Some Interesting Reuses

This is the ultimate silicon tube hack

You can recycle used up silicon tubes by filling them up with other liquids such as carpenters glue.

It’s easy to use a rod to push the plunger in an old tube bark out the bottom and clean any residual out of the tube with a paper towel and stick.

Now you can fill the tube with a new liquid that you can apply with a caulking gun.

Don’t forget to label the tube so you and others know what’s in it.

Filling Defects In Wood Withe Epoxy

Some boards are perfect on one side but have some defects on the back side.

Let’s use a table top as an example. The top surface has to look really good. On the bottom you can get away with some defects.

What To Look For In A Tape Measure

All tape measures are not created equal

This article and video is about the subtle difference between the various professional tape measures.

The first thing to do is pull out the blade and look at the markings. There is one common brand of tape out there that deserves to go out of business because the division lines on the tape are all fairly long before they start changing length for the various fraction. You can not tell at a glance what the dimension is with this tape. Look for a tape where the smallest fraction line is no more than an 1/8″ long and increasing by at least 1/16″ each step up the fractional scale.

You want a quality blade with a slippery coating that prevents wear and makes it easy to slide in and out.

You need a blade with enough curve and stiffness to it, to hold the blade up as you extend it out unsuported. The further oun the better. Milwaukee wins here at 9′, Stanley at 7′ 6″, Starrett at 6′ and Irwin at 9′.

The hook on the end of the tape needs to be large, making it easy to hook on to the material to be measured. The end of an Irwin tape I own is way too small, very annoying to use. The hook should be well fastened to the end of the blade 3 to 5 rivets. It should also be long enough so it doesn’t flip up when you pull hard on it.

There needs to be a way to control the speed of the tape retracting and a easily operating locking button to stop the tape from retracting. For many you just hold your finger under the tape while retracting. I love the way Milwaukee has done it with that gap for your finger behind the nosing bar. With the finger control there the tape seems to fit your hand perfectly and it prevents the edge of the tape from running against you skin and possibly cutting your finger.

The side clip on the tape is a very important feature. I’ve always liked the Stanley clips. They are large enough and bend out at the bottom enough to easily clip on to your pant pocket.

Some of the tape cases have rubber corners to protect them from drops. A Nice feature as well.

My favorite tapes at the moment are the Milwaukee tapes. The video below gives you a product review of these great tapes.

Quick Tip - Organize Your Drills And Drivers

Are You Like Me Always Wondering Where You Left The Impact Driver Or Drill?

Here is a great tip for giving your drills and drivers a home.

Get yourself a few scrap pieces of ABS or PVC pipe.

Cut out a slot in the bottom that the handle will slide in.

Then screw the pipe pieces, whatever length that works, to the underside of a cabinet.

This keeps those tools out of the clutter on the bench and other storage cabinets.

A home for those tools where they are easy to grab and put back, and they won’t get knocked on the floor and get broken.
